Description

A mixed 'sampler' case of Torii Mor's wines. The wines in this case give a great insight in to the differences in terroir across Oregon.

The majority of these wines come from 2007 - a cool vintage in Oregon characterised by delicacy and elegance wines, gentle tannins and fresh acidity. Although the wines are approaching maturity and are delicious now, they should happily cellar for another few years.

Alan Meadows (Burghound) and Jamie Goode (WineAnorak.com) are both fans of this estate as you'll see from their notes below.

The case contains:

Oregon Pinot Noir 2010 x1
Deux Verres Pinot Noir 2009/10 x1
Chehalem Mountain Select Pinot Noir 2007 x2
Eola Amity Hills Select Pinot Noir 2007 x2
Olalla Pinot Noir 2007 x2
Dundee Hills Select Pinot Noir 2007 x2
La Cuillere Member's Reserve Pinot Noir 2007 x2

Jamie Goode/Wine Anorak:

http://www.wineanorak.com/wineblog/pinot-noir/pinot-noirs-from-torii-mor-oregon

I visited Oregon back in 2008, and one of the wineries I had a look at was Torii Mor. Bid For Wine have managed to secure a stash of these small production Pinot Noirs which they are offering through their website. I got to try them and my notes are here. These are particularly balanced and quite elegant expressions of Pinot.

Torii Mor Pinot Noir 2010 Oregon
12.9% alcohol. Pale cherry red in colour. Ripe, fresh and supple nose of cherries and plums. The palate is sweetly fruited and supple with a bit of spicy structure under the restrained cherry fruit. Drinkable and fresh with some elegance. 89/100

Torii Mor Eola Amity Hills Select Pinot Noir 2007 Oregon
From four vineyards, 13.3% alcohol, 23% new oak, 328 cases produced. Sweetly aromatic nose of cherries, plums and spice with a bit of warmth and some tea notes. The palate is silky and ripe with some taut, focused spiciness. There’s a nice balance of richness, subtlety and elegance. 93/100

Torii Mor Dundee Hills Select Pinot Noir 2007 Oregon
From three sites in the Dundee Hills, 13.3% alcohol, 21% new oak, 353 cases produced. Rich, sweet and aromatic with a warm, spicy soy and tar edge to the rich berry fruits. The palate is supple and lush with sweet, juicy cherry fruit and some warm, tarry, spicy character adding a savouriness. 91/100

Torii Mor La Cuillère Members’ Reserve 2007 Oregon
From three vineyards, 13.9% alcohol, 30% new oak, 252 cases produced. Silky, smooth and elegant with cherry and red berry fruits. Nice texture here. Light and supple but with some complexity. Lovely freshness and good acidity. 93/100

Torii Mor Olalla Vineyard Umpqua Valley Pinot Noir 2007 Oregon
From a 4.5 acre vineyard in southern Oregon this has been aged in 40% new oak. Fresh and quite elegant with some structure to the lovely cherry and plum fruit. Nicely savoury spicy edge to the supple, expressive fruit which shows some sweetness and a touch of herbal character. Freshness and elegance to the fore. 92/100

Torii Mor Deux Verres Reserve Pinot Noir 2010 Willamette Valley, Oregon
13.6% alcohol, 26% new oak, 650 cases. Cherry red colour. Lovely supple pure, ripe yet elegant cherry fruit nose is beautifully poised. The palate is mid-weight, silky and smooth with nice freshness allied to ripeness, and a subtle peppery hint. Lovely elegant mouthfeel here. 93/100

Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com & Alan Meadows, Burghound.com

Torii Mor, Select Pinot Noir 2007 Chehalem Mountains:

Pommard clones from the Alloro Vineyard (30.77%) and the Arbre Vert Vineyard (23.08%). Hansell, 777, 667 and 114 clones from the Hawkes View Vineyard (46.15%). 15% is aged in new French oak, 25% in one-year-old barrels, 15% in two-year-old barrels, and the rest in old neutral oak barrels. 328 cases.

Quite a lot of development at the rim and a tinge of tea-leaf at the core. A warming welcoming nose – cloves and orange peel and plums. Cranberry fruit with a little nub of spiky acidity which gives the wine a rather snappy profile and a crackle in the mouth. There is palate weight here without any fat. Christmas spices and dried fruit giving depth, with just the merest tannins, like a tap on the reins. Somehow snug, and a wine that makes me think of a big open-hearth fireplace and roasting chestnuts. 17pts (TC) Drink 2010-2016

Torii Mor, Select Pinot Noir 2007 Dundee Hills 17 Drink 2010-2016:

42.86% from the Bella Vida Vineyard, 28.57% from the La Colina Vineyard, 28.57% from the Olson Estate Vineyard. Just under a quarter in new French oak, half in one-year-old barrels, and the rest in neutral oak barrels. 353 cases produced.

Palest of all the Torii Mors tasted, this one smells almost German, with delicate wild-strawberry perfume. Chiffon tannins barely draped over red berry fruit. Gentle, soft, but with enough acidity to give length and freshness. A subtle autumnal undertow. Not a Pinot to turn heads, but one for quiet companionship. (TC) 13.3%

Tasting note: A briar-suffused red and dark berry nose that evidences touches of earth and crushed herbs that merge into attractively rich and quite supple middle weight flavors that culminate in a nervous and somewhat tangy finish that has just a trace of dryness to it that isn't enough to upset the balance but detracts from the sense of harmony.
Tasted: Jan 30, 2010 Score: 86 Drink: 2013+ BH

Torii Mor, Deux Verres Pinot Noir 2010 Oregon

Some sour cherry. Tart and pert and refreshing, with a lick of tarragon. Quite elegant and understated. Not long, but the finish is clean cut and refreshing. Tannins are tailored and crisp. A good tight mid palate with more depth of fruit than the entry-level Pinot, and the oak is better integrated. Lots of easy fresh drinking pleasure. 16 pts (TC) Drink 2013-2016:

'A fresh, pure and very pretty nose offers up notes of red and blue pinot fruit along with more somber and darker plum and black berry aromas that also display earth and briar hints. There is good vibrancy to the well-detailed and lilting middle weight flavors that possess slightly better depth on the focused and moderately persistent finish.'
Tasted: Sep 10, 2012 Score: 88 Drink: 2014+ BH

We also have some 2009:

'This is more aromatically complex compared to the 2010 version with lovely purity to the ripe dark berry fruit scents. The energetic and intense flavors possess excellent detail and that beguiling sense of underlying tension. This does finish with a mild hint of bitterness that will probably age out as there is better phenolic ripeness to the supporting structure.'
Tasted: Sep 10, 2012 Score: 89 Drink: 2015+ BH

Torii Mor, Select Pinot Noir 2007 Umpqua Valley:

Picked 14 and 15 October at 2.71 tons/acre and were fermented by indigenous yeast in small fermentors. Punch-down three times daily, pressed very gently, and racked to a variety of new (40%) and used French oak barrels; 30% one-year-old, 20% two-year-old, the rest neutral. The barrels were racked in April then again in August when the blend was put together before returning to barrels for another four months.
Smells almost Bordeaux-like: cedary and cassis. Succulent smelling. Quite a defined oak presence on the palate. That sweet coconut note which I found on the entry-level Pinot. Dark fruit and vanilla swathed in ripe tannin. A statement, certainly. Not for Burgundy lovers. 16pts (TC) Drink 2010-2017

Torii Mor Pinot Noir 2010 Oregon 15
Quite subdued on the nose. Discernible oak, giving the wine a coconut veneer which didn't seem to fit the Pinot fruit very comfortably. Fresh red fruit, pretty, but verging on the skinny side. It’s just that heavy maquillage of oak... 15 pts (TC) Drink 2013-2015

'Light ruby. A shy, pure, cool and airy nose of red and dark berry fruit aromas is liberally laced with briar and earth hints. There is a suppleness to the light to barely medium weight flavors that possess a clean and polished mouth feel before culminating in a mildly austere finish that offers acceptable depth and length.'
