Description

The last time I tasted '71 Mouton was in the mid-80s in a café/diner on the side of the N10 in the Charente. It was a 100 frf wine - a tenner! I went back until they had no more left...as one does.

In 1971, Mouton was a second growth, only being 'promoted' by Pres Pompidou on his deathbed in 1973 as a great favour to his chum, Ph de Rothschild.

Anyway, this is a good bottle featuring a pristine Kandinsky label (important with Mouton) a French duty paid capsule showing no signs of seepage, and the level at Very Top Shoulder as per the photos.

This wine, which was a medium-weight, charming example in its youth, continues to develop well. Recent bottles have been the finest I have tasted of the 1971 Mouton-Rothschild. The color remains a deep dark garnet with some amber at the edge. The wine offers up a classic Pauillac nose of cedar, black currants, and lead pencil aromas. On the palate, it reveals a savory, sweet, cedary, currant flavor profile with good freshness, adequate acidity, and ripe tannin. The wine is fully mature, but is capable of lasting for another 5-10 years. Last tasted 10/97
