From case bought several years ago at auction. One of those all to infrequent auction purchases that makes you smile every time you open a bottle. See previous 2 tasting notes.

Such a lovely bottle of wine -- nearly 30 years in the bottle. The color is still as black as night -- deep purple. The nose is clean -- notes of pine, cedar and graphite with just a faint hint of alcohol esters. Round, lush and fruit forward in the mouth -- sweet, dark cherries. Tannins suggest another 3 years of life. Alas, this is the final bottle of an original case purchased upon release. If you went into your local wine shop today and spent forty dollars on a bottle, you would not find a comparable drinking experience. Absolutely beautiful.
My words of wisdom to those of you just starting out in the wine collecting business. Avoid cult, fad wines. Buy classic quality. Buy young. Pay less. Cellar for decades. You will not be disappointed.

The old adage about there not being great vintages, only great bottles popped into my mind as I tasted this wine. Opened and left in cellar to slow ox for 3 hours prior to drinking, this may have showed just a bit better than the bottle from 7/03. Really everything you could hope for from a aged claret at this price point. Although the end is near, if I could find a case of this with good provenance, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Just a very nice wine that doesn't need food to be enjoyed. Score may be a little generous, but hard not to when the wine delivers this much enjoyment compared to bottles costing much more. Very well received by friends.
