Description

FOR SALE: ONE BOTTLE OF 1989 PHILIPPONNAT CLOS DES GOISSES CHAMPAGNE

Sold in as new condition, this rather lovely champagne is one for the connoisseurs. Disgorged in 1999 after 10 years of aging, it has been stored correctly in a dark cool place all its disgorged life. I have little doubt it will be drinking very well. Some information on the producer:

Clos des Goisses has one of the most unique microclimates in the whole of Champagne. Standing majestically above the marne river, the extremely steep, pure chalk slopes face directly south maximisiing both heat and light into the vineyard. It is the warmest site in the whole of Champagne measuring on average 1.5degrees C more than others. Situated in the very heart of Champagne, harvest usually takes place a week earlier than neighbouring areas.

The blend is usually 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, with 30-50% of the blend fermented in oak casks. Malaolactic fermentation is deliberately discouraged to maintain freshness and vivacity balancing the fruit intensity and alcohol.

What makes Clos des Goisses so special is that it can produce great Champagne from the most dire of vintages. When all others fail- Clos des Goisses still emerges triumphant. What needs to be remembered is that these are wines that require cellaring to show their best. Generally the wines need a good ten years to begin to show their best and most often require two decades.

The average production is a mere 15-20,000 bottles which may explain why it is adored and revered by champagne afficionados and unknown by most. Let's keep it that way as it as scarce enough as it is!

A couple of tasting notes as follows:

Clos des Goisses 1989 (from magnum)- A clean, vanillin, brioche nose,-much fresher than the 1990. So unbelievably youthful and unevolved- a beautiful, beautiful wine- one of the best- with another 20-30 years before it really shows its best from magnum. Patience will reward but it will prove to be a challenge to resist its charms. Another star in the making...(Champagne Gallery)

1989 Clos des Goisses
“ Fat aromas are contrasted by tight, elegant pineapple fruit on the palate. This cuvee has recently started to develop richness and give some hint of its eventual complexity.” Tom Stevenson.

This champagne is not currently widely available as the notes suggest - indeed only Nichols and Perks are selling it - for £250 ex VAT. My reserve is set considerably below this, but reflects the condition and prestige of this bottle.

The bottle will be sent securely packaged and insured above the winning bid, on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, collection in person can be arranged.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Please also see my other bottles for sale.
