Description

The lot consists of two bottles of classic Australian Shiraz, both from top vintages:-

One bottle of 1990 Kay Brothers,Amery Vintage Block 6 Shiraz(McLaren Vale).
One bottle of 1996 Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (Hunter Valley).

These wines are both unavailable in the UK,but according to Winesearcher, both wines are still available in Australia for at least £100.00 per bottle.

"Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz is a very powerful, concentrated cellaring style with plenty of fruit richness, chocolaty tannins and underlying malty oak. The 1.6 hectare Block 6, which forms part of the Kay Brother's larger 22 hectare Amery Vineyards, was originally a "pumpkin patch" of old bush vines. The Block 6 fruit is batch-vinified in three to five tonne traditional open fermenters originally built by the Kay Brothers in 1895/6. Some parcels are hand plunged while others are fermented under header boards. At completion of fermentation the wine is drained and basket pressed into a combination of one-third each new, one year old and two year old American and Eastern European oak. Maturation takes place for around 18 to 24 months before assemblage".

Langton's Classification of Australian wines (description of Bloc 6 above),they are arguably the best barometer of fine wine in Australia and rate the Block 6 Shiraz as "Outstanding" with 1990 being one of the Top Vintages and they rate the Graveyard Vineyard as "Exceptional".

"The 1996 Shiraz Graveyard Vineyard, a well-known vineyard in the Hunter Valley whose vines average 28 years of age, is spectacular. When I put my nose in the glass of this wine, three wines came to mind - the famed Chateauneuf du Pape, Rayas, the renowned Pomerol micro-estate of Lafleur, and the grand cru Burgundy, Musigny. Incredible scents of black raspberry liqueur intermixed with flowers, kirsch, and spice soar from the glass of this profound, concentrated, multidimensional effort. Amazingly, the wine has been aged in American oak, but reveals none of the aggressive whiskey barrel scents that American oak sometimes imparts. The Graveyard Vineyard is multidimensional and complex, with extraordinary concentration, and an ethereal sense of richness and length. The finish lasts for nearly 50 seconds. This fabulously suave, yet remarkably concentrated and well-delineated wine is a wine making tour de force as well as one of the most exceptional old vine Shiraz I have tasted from Australia".
(96 Points).

Robert Parker. (Wine Advocate. #122. April 1999).

Further tasting notes on the 1996 Graveyard Shiraz:-

"A lovely floral Pinot Noir-like nose with forest floor to boot. In the mouth it’s medium- bodied with delicious chocolate cherry truffle attractively “washed” by gentle acidity. Linseed and cedar spice bring complexity and lift to the finish. A delicious, mellow wine, perfectly balanced and with the intensity to offer several more years’ pleasure".

"Another dry/cold winter in 1995, but early irrigation saw a good budburst, with follow-up spring rain. Fruit set was excellent, enabling a good yield. No down pours at harvest, although some rain meant the usual early picking. For the Graveyard Shiraz there were at least 10 separate treatments including run-off trials for an honours thesis by Caroline Dunn, a 4th-year Adelaide University student and now well known for winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy. Post-vintage tasting leant heavily in favour of the run-off wines and extended maceration. A slightly higher crop than usual at 5 tonne/hectare (2 tonne/acre), with the resultant alcohol at 12.8%. A youthful-looking wine with crimson red hues.French and American oak was used (still favouring the latter in percentage), giving a briar wood/vanillin lift. It is important to avoid the overt American oak ‘coconut’ characters. Ripe fruit aromas and flavours abound as plum/dark berry and dried fruit nuances. A mid-weight palate that shows the trademark earth/licorice flavours built on dry savoury tannins. The palate structure is often referred to as Rhone/Italian-like because of the intense flavours, lower alcohol and dry finish. A wine destined to be a great Hunter Valley dry red as the primary fruit characters are transformed to polished leather and earthy Hunter Shiraz flavours. Has at least 20 years in front of it! Alc:12.8%, T/A:6.19g/l, pH:3.39".
