Description

Fonsalette is a Cotes du Rhone appelation wine made by Jacques Reynaud at Chateau Rayas. The 1990 was a particularly good vintage here and was rated 94 pts by Robert Parker.

RP (1996) : The opaque black-colored 1990 Cuvee Syrah offers an extraordinary perfume of hickory wood, chocolate, cassis, and black fruits, staggering richness, astonishing opulence, plenty of alcohol, and gobs of tannin. I suspect this massive wine will need at least 10 years of cellaring to reach its zenith. A dazzling effort, this wine does require discipline, as it must be cellared, unless it is consumed by masochists.

RP (1992) : True Syrah lovers who cannot get enough of Gerard Chave's Hermitage should take a look at the 1990 Fonsalette-Cuvee Syrah. This opaque black-colored wine is produced from an old Syrah vineyard begun with cuttings from Gerard Chave's own vineyards in Hermitage. It exhibits a roasted nut, barbecued spice, cassis, herb, and chocolate-scented nose. It is a wine of ravishing richness and massive texture and depth. There are mouth-coating, ripe tannins in the whoppingly long finish. Fortunately, the tannins are soft rather than astringent, so there is no question that given time this wine should turn into something breathtaking. Red wine lovers, French wine enthusiasts, and particularly Rhone Rangers should get their orders in as quickly as possible now that Jacques Reynaud has bottled his 1990s. They are every bit as prodigious as I suggested last year. It is hard to believe he could make greater wines than he did in 1988 and 1989, but the more torrid growing season, the lower yields, and Reynaud's knack for getting the most out of his ancient vineyards have resulted in some of the most thrilling, sumptuous, exotic, kinky wines anyone could ever taste. From a property that is known for its decadently rich and hedonistic red wines, these should prove to be monuments.
