Description

A very good example of this Saint-Julien under the ownership of Léoville Las Cases. Complete label, level high in the neck and an embossed capsule covering a firm cork.

Score: 87/89 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (116), April 1998
It possesses many of the characteristics of its more renowned sibling. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 1997 is seductive, open-knit, and evolved. The colour is a healthy dark ruby/purple, and the wine offers plenty of pure, oak-tinged, black cherry and cassis fruit, elegant, silky-textured flavours, and admirable fat and depth on the mid-palate. Readers will find the low acid/high Ph texture captivating. This wine should drink well for the next decade.
.........................................................................
I have always been confused about this label. Is it, or is it not a second wine as many describe it? Well, it aint!
I wrote to Yorick Dalton, an administrator of the two and he explains...

Bonjour Richard

In other words, English words...
Clos du Marquis is definitively another wine from the property with a different soil (sand and gravel as per Talbot and L. Poyferré). It too has a second wine - 'La Petite Marquise'. Las Cases covers an exceptional terroir of gravel of differing depths intermingled with layers of chalk, a veritable 'millefeuille' leading down to the river. LLC has a second wine - Le Petit Lion. So, remember there are 2 Grands Vins on 2 differing soils and 2 second wines and that Clos du M has not been a second wine for a long time.

There you have it - horse's mouth.
