Description

There is a large percentage of Grenache in the cepage of the 1998 Beaucastle that has created an unusually forward wine for this estate, which, although not to everybody's taste (especially the nose) I still think has some fine qualities. My notes from a recent tasting:-

"This wine is obviously in a secondary development.A nose of stewed plums, tar, leather, earth, molasses, garrigue, bacon, very savory. On the palate...elegant,beautiful balance, with integrated tannins, earthy, savory, tar, redcurrants,a lovely warm, velvety, powerful, weighty feel, with lingering spicy length. If you like the unusual mature Grenache style (and I did),it's a splendid food wine".

Topterroir. (15/3/2013).

"That may explain the open-knit,complex note of tree bark, black cherries, licorice, seaweed, pepper, and floral notes in the 1998 Beaucastel. The wine is medium to full-bodied,has nice sweet tannins, and is surprisingly open and approachable. This wine has reached its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least a decade or more.Atypically forward for a wine from Beaucastel,my recollection is that the actual percentage of Grenache, which never exceeds the Mourvedre in its final blend, was much higher in 1998 than in other years".
(92 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #189. June 2010).

"The 1998 is unquestionably one of the great modern-day Beaucastels, but because of its high Grenache content,it is different from the other classics.Aromas and flavors of kirsch, licorice, earth, and new saddle leather.Very full-bodied,intense,with surprisingly supple tannin, this is a more forward style, but with great longevity. Anticipated maturity: now-2031". (Written approx.2003).
(98 Points).
