Description

Although the 1998 vintage was not particularly good for the Bordeaux Left Bank wines,it was a superb vintage in Pessac-Leognan,St.Emilion and Pomerol,as these appellations were favoured by the early ripening of the Merlot grape.
Chateau Haut-Brion 1998 is arguably the Bordeaux wine of the vintage,as the percentage of Merlot used in the cepage was approximately 50%.In 1998,all harvesting of the grapes at Haut-Brion was achieved by 25th September, when the heavy rains arrived and many other chateaux (especially Left Bank) had not even commenced their Cabernet Sauvignon harvest:-

"An incredible rich and complex Haut-Brion,which potentially equals the 1989.Aromas of crushed berries, tobacco, lead, cinnamon, spice, and wet earth follow through to a gorgeously caressing palate, with big velvety tannins and a long delicious aftertaste.A triumph for the vintage".
(95-100 Points).

James Suckling. (The Wine Spectator. February 2000).

James Suckling later consolidated his points rating on this wine to 98 Points.(WineSpectator.com November 2006).

"A prodigious Haut-Brion.It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a tight but incredibly promising nose of smoke, earth, minerals, lead pencil, blackcurrants, cherries, and spice. This full-bodied wine unfolds slowly but convincingly on the palate, revealing a rich, multitiered, stunningly pure, symmetrical style with wonderful sweetness, ripe tannin, and a finish which lasts nearly 45 seconds. It tastes like liquid nobility. There is really no other way of describing it.It is unquestionably the finest Haut-Brion since the fabulous 1989 and 1990.However,patience is required as it not as flashy and forward as those two vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035".
(96+ Points).
