Description

In his most recent tasting of 1998 clarets in August 2012,Robert Parker awards the 1998 La Mission with 98 Points and considers it to be the wine of the vintage:-

"A candidate for wine of the vintage for this somewhat forgotten year, consumers should be seeking wines from the Right Bank and the Graves as 1998 was a great vintage in these appellations.La Mission's 1998 exhibits a healthy blue/purple color with no lightening at the edge.Thirty minutes of aeration brings forth a sensational bouquet of chocolate, cedar, truffles, graphite, blackberries, cassis, and incense.La Mission's so called scorched earth/charcoal/hot rocks characteristics have not yet appeared.Full-bodied,with superb purity,a multi-layered texture, sweet tannin, good acidity, and a fabulously long finish, this great young La Mission-Haut-Brion's finest days are still to come. Anticipated maturity:2018-2040".
(98 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #202. August 2012).

In a massive Haut-Brion/La Mission-Haut-Brion vertical tasting held in Los Angeles in 2010,Bipin Desai organised 68 wines from different vintages to taste from the two chateaux in an event that lasted for two days. The Decanter magazine names the top twenty highlights and the 1998 la Mission-Haut-Brion features with 19.5/20 Points and is awarded ***** (Five Stars) and comes equal second, behind the great 1989 La Mission-Haut-Brion (20/20 Points).

"Explosive aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, iron, spice, anise, and a long finish, incredible density and concentration, yet it dances. Drink 2011-2025".
(19.5/20 Points).

Larry Stone. (Tasted in 2010. Article in Decanter. September 2011).
