Description

About the wine

The 2000 "Millennium" vintage has aged beautifully and can be drank now or kept for a decade or so.

A powerful wine, with an inverse blend to the sweet wine, the dry ‘Y’ or ‘Ygrec’ is made with 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. A tiny amount of botrytis is allowed on the Semillon giving an extraordinary depth to the wines. Ygrec is made with the same uncompromising quest for quality as their the famous Yquem sweet wine but is only produced in particular vintages.

Notes from the producer

The 2000 vintage will long be remembered for above-average temperatures. Except for the unseasonable cool period around the 14th of July, it was constantly 2°C warmer than usual in March, June, August, and September. This inevitably led to very early maturity, with physiological ripeness reached at the very beginning of September in grapes that actually suffered from a lack of water. The perfect ripeness of the very early-maturing Sauvignon Blanc in 2000 meant that we could pick a few bunches as early as the 12th and 13th of September. However, as of the 13th, we were able to create a more usual balance with the slightly less opulent Sémillon.

About the producer

Chateau Yquem is without doubt the grandest and best known of all the great Sauternes estates. In fact, it is widely regarded as one of if not the most exclusive dessert wines produced anywhere in the world. When classified in 1855, Yquem was granted the exclusive and unique title of Premier Cru Supérieur.

The list of past owners reads like a who’s who: King Louis VII and King Henry II were just two of the illustrious previous owners. In more recent times (1785), the estate became the property of the Lur-Saluces family. After a 219 year family association with the Chateau, Alexandre Lur-Saluces stood down in 2004. Now the property is under the ownership of luxury goods brand LVMH and the stewardship of Pierre Lurton and wine maker Sandrine Garbay.

In all, they have 100 hectares of vines, planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Pickers are required to undertake numerous tries, depending on the vintage.
