Description

Two bottles from the famous 2000 vintage, fresh from storage by The Wine Society. In perfect order.

Robert Parker 90 Drink: 2008 - 2019
An outstanding Duhart, certainly one of the best produced at this estate since the 1996, 1986, and 1982, this blend of 80.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19.5% Merlot reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of lead pencil intermixed with wet stones, black currants, and a certain leafiness. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and dense, but tightly-knit, with considerable tannin, it will require patience. For those willing to wait, it will be a sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019.

From magnum. Excellent wine--there's much more to this than the Lafite name on the label. Pretty much at peak, with a solid core of dark fruit and some nice tobacco character. Balanced, with only moderate extraction. A classic style.

Elegant and quite expressive nose of red berries, cedar and meat. Rather focused, restrained and almost narrow on the nose. (Drank beside a Pontet Canet 2000 which was quite different, being a lot more generous and broad). The taste is round, sweet (in the same restrained, elegant and a bit narrow style) and harmonious. Fully mature now.

Colour: medium/dark ruby -> medium ruby rim; no sign of bricking. Classic Pauillac bouquet of pencil lead, leather, cedar, a little earth and road tar. Palate followed nose with mineral elements and blackberries and a little iodine. Good, medium-bodied structure; adequate acid level and medium-long finish with light tannins still. I find myself liking this wine for its impeccable balance but wishing it had just a bit more concentration/intensity. While drinking perfectly now, I think this still has a lot of time to go. Textbook medium-bodied Pauillac.
