This estate has emerged as a legitimate superstar in Chateauneuf du Pape,largely because of the efforts of the two brothers,Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio,who have taken charge over the last several years.
The spectacular 2000s may be even better than the 1998s produced at this estate.The spectacular Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is breathtaking.A black/purple color is followed by an extraordinary nose of blueberry/blackberry liqueur intermixed with kirsch,minerals,and flower aromas.Extremely full-bodied,with a 45 second finish,this stunning full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should age for 20-25 years. The profound 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul (85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah,Mourvedre,and Cinsault) tips the scales at 15% alcohol.From an old vineyard and cropped at 15 hectolitres per hectare,and aged only in foudre,it boasts a dense purple color in addition to an exquisite nose of violets.minerals,blueberries and blackberries.Pure and concentrated,but atypically tannic,it requires considerable aging as it is one of the vintage's most backward,broodingly powerful efforts. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.
