The vineyards of Château-Grillet have existed since the occupation of the Romans. Legend has it that the vineyards of Condrieu and Chateau-Grillet were planted by Emperor Probus with plants he imprted from the Dalmatian Coast. The peace established at that time made the development of the production area easier. In fact, the Roman citizenship was given to locals who could plant the vines. In the 17th Century, the growth of the wine trade with the Loire further increased the awareness of the estate. It was even notably cited in the chronicles of an amateur voyager. It is during this same period that Manor house of Chateau-Grillet was expanded and continued to grow bigger over the years.

For a long time the property was owned by a Bourgeoisies families from Lyon until the purchase by Neyret-Gachet in 1827. This purchase only increased the reputation of the estate, until it was named one of the first AOC in 1936. It then was the product of many successions within the family until 2011, when François Pinault, owner of Château Latour in Pauillac and Domaine d’Eugénie in Vosne-Romanée, purchased it. However, it remains an atypical appellation. With only 3.5 hectares owned and managed by one proprietor, it is a unique monopoly, much like those found in Burgundy, in the Rhone Valley.

Split across two communes, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône and Vérin, it is the smallest appellation in the Rhone Valley. South of Vienne, on the right bank of the Rhone River, it is characterized by its light and fragmented soil rich in mica. Grown on terraces, because of its steep slopes, it benefits from a hot microclimate and good sun exposure. Its name also comes from the slopes, which are “grilles” or burned by the sun. These small terraces demand precision from the growers who are forced to rely on manual labor. A state of mind inherent in Château-Grillet, the fields underwent biodynamic conversion in 2011 after the acquistion. Here it is the humans who have the privilege to promote the delicate balance between the soil, the vines and the environment.
