Description

Tuscany is the home of Italy’s most famous IGT category not just because it produces more IGT wine than any other region, but also because it was the famous ‘Super Tuscan’ wines made here that led to the creation of the category.

The 100% Merlot Masseto, on the other hand, has proven to be a wine of greater singularity. Its unique, unmistakable personality always comes through, especially in a set of widely diverse vintages, as this vertical attests. The Masseto vineyard measures roughly 7 hectares. Set on a gently sloping hill, the vineyard is divided into three sections, which contain different clay-based soil types.

Smooth, rounded and "easy-drinking" are common descriptions of Merlot wines. Merlot might be seen as the reliable grape variety, or as an insurance policy. Along with its capacity to soften wine, it is early maturing – meaning that it ripens even in slightly cooler climates.

“The 2009 Masseto bursts from the glass with dark red berries, blackberries, flowers, licorice and tar. It shows lovely up-front juiciness and expressive inner perfume in a surprisingly accessible style for this wine. Like the Ornellaia, the 2009 Masseto has quite a bit of freshness, although it, too, is medium-bodied in structure. In this vintage the Ornellaia team was especially selective and only used part of the three vineyards that typically go into Masseto. I have been fortunate to taste every vintage of Masseto, most more than once recently. Masseto has a great track record for aging, even in the smallest, least promising of vintages.
