Robert Parker 92-95 - Apr 2002
The extraordinary 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is more structured, powerful, and concentrated than the 1997. My ratings for the component parts ranged from a low of 90-92 for La Grande Plantee, to a high of 94-96 for La Pommiere and Pavillon Rouge. All revealed huge colors, earthy, smoky noses with bacon fat and black currants, and various degrees of tannin. This is unquestionably a vintage for patient connoisseurs as it requires cellaring. It is dense, chewy, and muscular. This wine will be at its finest between 2007-2020

I tasted all six components of the 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis and rated each cuvee between a low of 91-92 for La Grande Plantee, to a high of 93-96 for La Garde and La Pommiere. It appears to be a superlative Chateau d'Ampuis, offering power, concentration, structure, and intensity presented in a style not dissimilar from muscular, tannic years such as 1988 and 1983. It will require 2-4 years of cellaring, and will age for two decades.

The 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis looks to be sensational. I rated all six cuvees at least outstanding, with stunning wine obviously being produced from Le Clos, La Garde, Le Moulin, Pavillon Rouge, and La Grande Plantee. The color is a dense saturated ruby/purple. The wine already reveals tell-tale coffee, espresso bean, black cherry, raspberry, and cassis fruit flavors. Full-bodied, with noticeable but silky tannin, this will be a terrific wine.
