Description

This auction is for 2 old vines bottles, which he ceased to produce from 2001. Retails around £100 in the UK ex delivery each.

"The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (15% alcohol) emerges from a cold terroir in the northern sector of the appellation. The blend is generally 85% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre. Its opaque purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice, plums, minerals, and smoke. Mammoth in the mouth, but surprisingly structured and tannic for a 2000, it is more evolved than its 2001 counterpart. This profound Chateauneuf should evolve slowly and age magnificently for two decades. It is a monumental effort, but patience will be a virtue. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Kudos to winemaker/proprietor Jean-Paul Dauman for this masterpiece!"

Robert Parker: 97 points

Here are the most recent Cellartracker notes. The median score is 94.1 (which is very high for 19 tasting notes):

2013 No score given:

"Excellent CDP. Beautiful back end of earth and pure fruit. Balanced palate with loads of complexity. Round and delicious."

2013 96 Points:

"Deep garnet color. First whiff from the nose was fantastic revealing a freshness of cherry fruit which sadly went quickly away leaving in its place liqueur-like, jammy and darker fruit. Nose is scented, complex and mature with tertiary aromas accompanying abundant fruit like blackberry and plum and minerals. Palate is even more intense than the nose with unending finish. Fruit is liqueur-like as the wine is full bodied and with lots of glycerol. Yet it is balanced and drinks effortlessly. Flavors include spices, herbs and ground coffee. Tannins are mellow and acidity has to be high for the wine to be in such an impeccable balance.
The wine is mature but I believe it could age and last for at least twenty more years given its structure and still abundant fruit..."

2013 No score given:

"Still deeply colored. Thrilling aromatics of tobacco, leather, menthol and plum. Full and ripe but basically old fashioned, complex and savory with strong plum, raspberry and bark. No untoward sweetness and excellent acidity for the vintage. Will last but this is fantastic now and by far the most exciting Chateauneuf I've had in some time."

2013 95 Points:

"This is a very big wine, gorgeous full nose of spice and red fruits. Complex wine, coming from the old vines (100 year old Grenache vines) Spicy red fruits, red pepper, mocha/coffee, some raisin and medicinal fruit in the background.

Huge finish, liqueur like. 30 seconds. Big and interesting wine that will probably add complexity over time. Was a favorite of this group, given its size and jamminess it may not be for everyone."

2012 95 Points:

"Drinking perfectly today, the offers ample, fresh, ripe. spicy red and black fruits, earth and fennel. Produced from Grenache vines that are mostly close to 100 years old, the wine is rich, soft, plush, long and complex."

2012 94 Points:

"2000 High-end Chateauneuf du Pape Horizontal (Bin 75): Extremely complex yet lacking balance. Definitely a blockbuster when it was younger due to its slight volatility now. BBQ sauce, spicy red pepper, mocha, jammy, Dr. Pepper, sweet, radish, raisin in the background, and a cognac-like finish. Very large scaled and interesting even though I would not want to drink a ton of it."

2011 No score given:

"Fairly dark and youthful looking. Strong aroma of medicinal black cherry, then some obvious surmaturite and an interesting blend of oregano and green herbs. Syrupy entry, dark fruit, bark all leavened by powerful acidity and prominent licorice on the finish. Although previous tasters have mentioned Grenache, the darker, brooding nature seems like the essence of Mourvedre to me. Big, serious, interesting wine only slightly marred by its overripeness. This traditional Chateauneuf will last for a long time."

2011 95 Points:

"Wine is in a great place right now, just beautiful grenache fruit on the nose and wonderful balance. Fruit is dark and the acidity is just right. 3rd time I've had this in the past year or so, and this was the best bottle."
