My good wine friend drew Kirk has sent me more info regards this wine..see below The wine is now produced by Chateau Haut-Bailly since 2012. This wine was formerly labeled as Château Le Pape l'Excellence Pessac-Léognan. It is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc dominated blend with some Merlot. Located in the commune of Leognan, Chateau Le Pape was created in the 18th century by Pierre Bobineau. He was a master sail maker in Bordeaux. Plot by plot he constituted a small vineyard with gravely soil & built his residence there in 1805. In 1931 it won a gold medal in Paris & won the Grand Prix at the universal exhibition in Brussels. So some heritage. It is only a 7 hectare block so this bottle is a very good find. The chateau has changed hands a number of times starting in 1841 when an exiled Spanish priest from Catalonia took it on, but it was some the bigger Bordeaux family names that had owner ship over the decades...The Theil, Legros & Monjanel families.
