Description

1 bottle of Domaine de la Biscarelle, from one of the best quality producing terroirs in Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC. Bottle in excellent condition and level into neck, as seen on the photos.

'Dark crimson with lots of viscosity. Savoury, herbal (dried grasses?) attention-grabbing nose. Very sweet and rich with salty treacle edges to it on the palate. Well integrated and balanced. Very neat and self-contained.' Jancis Robinson. Score 18/20

About “Les Anglaises”: This top cuvée is from Domaine de la Biscarelle’s prized “Les Anglaises” vineyard. The vineyard is composed of vines that are primarily 80 to 105 years old. “Les Anglaises” is located on beautiful hillsides at the northern end of the appellation of Châteauneuf du Pape in an area called Cabrières. The soil is a complex mixture of galettes roulées, clay, and red sand.

'Technical Notes: Jérôme has chosen a non-interventionist, and perhaps even post-modernist, way to vinify his wines. The grapes are harvested by hand, (they are not de-stemmed), then they are fermented and aged exclusively in lined concrete tanks. The wine undergoes a 4 to 6 week maceration, with regular délestages and pump-overs. The wine is then aged in tank for 6 to 9 months. It is lightly filtered, but not fined, before bottling. Only 225 cases produced!

Tasting Notes: The wine making philosophy at Domaine de la Biscarelle is quite simple, Jérôme wants as little as possible to come between the consumer of his wine and the vineyard itself. He therefore ages his wine in tank, not barrel, and does not destem the grapes. The result is a beautiful combination of earthy terroir, spice, and intense fruit flavors. The 2012 Les Anglaises has a very spicy, black pepper nose. In the mouth earthy sous-bois (forest floor) notes quickly give way to black cherry fruit and garrigue notes. This wine combines the best of practices modern and traditional techniques to produce a beautifully built, complex Châteauneuf du Pape. '

'robust robe; pine-bosky air, with nutty notes, a bit spotty, not a real fresh child. Cooked up fruit on the palate, a wine of yore, absolutely one for winter and game dishes. Its unbridled nature appeals – no white coat technicians at this domaine. Robust, gummy, wide fruit on the palate. 15°. 2024-26 Sept 2011' DrinkRhone.com Score 4/5
