"Full, creamy and soft, this is a rich Champagne, very much a food wine. It has great ripe swathes of peach and pineapple flavors, rounded by toast. While 2000 is not a vintage for aging, this opulent Champagne may be the exception."

"The 2000 Brut La Grande Annee is a ripe, open wine bursting with generous, expansive fruit. Smoke, minerals, pastry crust and flowers add complexity to the radiant fruit. The Grande Annee reveals gorgeous depth and a multi-dimensional, kaleidoscopic personality that screams of pure breed. The 2000 will be a fascinating vintage to follow. I am not sure it has the freshness to be an extremely long-lived wine, but it does a fabulous job in capturing the Bollinger house style. The 2000 Grande Annee is 63% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay of which 76% is Grand Cru and 24% is Premier Cru. This is Lot L911736. Disgorged January 19, 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020."

Disgorged Nov 09. Big and powerful from the off with a toffee and biscuit nose. Fine texture with a firm mousse, rounded and flavoursome with notes of freshly made biscuits, red berry and toffee. Great zip to counter the rich flavour and a long hazlenut filled finish. Excellent.

Year-end "James Bond" Party (Chad's, Chuville): This was absolutely delicious - a world away from the good, but rather tight bottle I had barely a year back. While the former was still mainly about potential, this bottle was singing. It had a beautifully exuberant nose, with rich drifts of umami showing in soy sauce and yeast, and then sweet notes of vanilla cream and ripe yellow fruit, all just brusting out of the glass. Really yummy on the palate too. Unlike the rather brusque Ruinart that preceded it, this was all smiles and warm friendliness, with a generously rich and fleshy feel to its mouthfilling flavours of ripe red apples, butter and cream, all swathed in a frothy mousse and balanced beautifully with supple acidity. It finished nicely too, with lick of mineral and white meat, and a touch of toasty nuts drifting away into the distance. A real success for the vintage, this was an excellent Champagne at a very nice spot.

Excellent champagne, a step above everything else on the evening. Lovely toasty, nutty notes but still really fresh and clean. Majestic finish.
