Description

Two bottles of this white burgundy from the 2001 vintage of a notable domaine. This is the straight Puligny rather than the premier cru. The wine is hard to find now.

Sylvain Bzikot’s grandfather was a Polish emigré who arrived in Puligny just before the War with nothing but the clothes he stood up in. From those humble beginnings this family domaine has managed to acquire an impressive 4 hectares of some of the most valuable agricultural land in the world, namely Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny 1er Cru. They own a further 9 hectares of “regional appellation”, producing Bourgogne Blanc, Aligoté and the like. The wine is vinified half in stainless steel and half in barrels, of which 90% are new, so that means that roughly 45% of the finished cuvée is vinified and aged in new wood. The stainless steel element of the cuvée brings a freshness and minerality such that the oak is all but unnoticeable. The farming is organic.

The bottles on sale are the ones shown in the photographs and come from a parcel sold to me in November 2004 by the late Ian G Howe, the wine merchant and burgundy specialist who was then based in Newark, Notts. They have been kept since purchase in a proper, cold underground cellar. The labels and capsules are decent and the levels are well into the neck as shown.
