Charmes-Chambertin, Armand Rousseau 1995

The '95 Charmes is denser than it usually is with plenty of sweet, expressive, relatively forward fruit and delicious, moderately well structured, ripe flavors that offer fine complexity and intensity on the medium length finish. There is a dusty quality to the tannins and this will probably always be a feature on the finish. Quite good though it must be said that this is hardly reference standard stuff.

Charmes-Chambertin, Armand Rousseau 1996

Lightly colored and precious little fruit on the nose and while the flavors are balanced, harmonious and certainly pleasant with acceptable depth and length, this is clearly not of grand cru quality. This will probably improve somewhat over the next few years but the lack of concentration and mid-palate density suggests it is best drunk on the young side. Tasted three times with consistent notes.

Charmes-Chambertin, Armand Rousseau 1998

An elegant and very pinot nose that is still largely primary in character complements round, pleasant and pretty middle weight flavors that are attractive and easy to like if not especially complex or powerful and while there is certainly a moderate lashing of tannic structure, this is surprisingly supple and forward for what it is. In short, as is usually the case with this wine, it is perfectly pleasant but certainly not distinguished for its level. I would continue to hold this for another few years but it could be drunk with pleasure now with food.
