Description

1978 was the year that Francois and Jean-Pierre took over the running of this superb southern Rhone estate when their father Jacques died. Famous for growing and using all 13 permitted varieties, this is great long lived wine, which will give you the full farmyard experience. I bought this wine from the Lloyd-Weber sale.

John Gilman View from the cellar nov/dec 2008.
Out of its rather gangly youth has now emerged an absolutely stellar vintage of Beaucastel, and the 1978 is still climbing up the quality ladder. The bouquet is deep, complex and blossoming brilliantly, as it offers up notes of fruitcake, bonfires, fading notes of barnyard from its youth, saddle leather, fallen leaves and espresso. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and resolving beautifully, with a great core of pure fruit, melting tannins, fine acidity, and superb length and grip on the complex and really blossoming finish. I would still give this fine wine another few years to let it develop the same degree of transparency as exhibited by the 1972 and 1967. It will be a great, great wine in another few years, and is already rather spectacular. I never envisioned this vintage of Beaucastel would turn out so well, and just goes to show that one needs to give top vintages of Beaucastel plenty of time to evolve in the bottle. A terrific wine. A Beaucastel that has always perplexed me is the 1978. Immediately prior to and after bottling, I thought it had a mid-ninety point potential. While still intact, with a deep ruby/garnet color to the rim as well as a sensational bouquet, the flavors are slightly austere, angular, and tough. It could easily last another 15-20 years, but I don’t think it will ever be opulent or charming, or provide the great pleasure I seek in a fine wine.

Guess which vintage of Beaucastel I purchased more of than any other? The 1978 continues to perplex me. I remember the massive richness and intensity it possessed both prior to bottling and for several years after bottling. It then did a complete reversal and retreated into its shell, revealing little more than a tannic, hard, charmless, severe style. Four bottles opened during the month of December (one was corked) offered little relief from the agonizing memory of the exceptional reviews I bestowed on this wine in its youth. The color remains a dark ruby with purple tints (a good sign). Although tight, the nose offers up some dusty red fruits (very little brett, thankfully), and a suggestion of ripeness. The wine hits the palate with a mass of tannin, narrowing out to a dry, austere, angular finish that is increasingly cause for concern. Nineteen seventy-eight is undoubtedly one of the slowest-maturing vintages Chateauneuf du Pape has ever had, and if I had not seen so many outstanding examples of this wine, I could easily dismiss it. Will 10 more years of bottle age reveal what I have always believed to be one of the great classic Beaucastels? Will this wine open and blossom, or will it lose its fruit and become increasingly more tannic, charmless. and austere? For now, hold on to that 1978 Beaucastel, with fingers crossed and a rabbit's foot placed close to the cellar door. Last tasted 12/95.
