Description

One bottle of wine from one of the leading domains in Chateauneuf-du Pape.

Some tasting notes notes:

“Very sweet and pure Syrah-like fruit on the nose, of dense blackcurrant and blueberries. Rounder, earthy aromas beneath. The palate shows tannins and fruit in good balance, though the overall impression is that this tightly-structured wine needs time. Very promising.” (Tom Cannavan. 92/100. Tasted January 1999).

"A ripe core of red currant and raspberry fruit and licorice flavor surrounded by creamy tannins. Plenty of smoke, mineral and tobacco notes chiming in, with plenty of grip still on the finish.” (Wine Spectator).

“The classic 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape will require discipline. Like most top vintages of Beaucastel, a decade of patience will be warranted before this wine will be enjoyable to drink. Given how tight and closed the 1993 and 1994 are, it is the rare vintage of Beaucastel (1989, 1990, and 1985) that is accessible in its youth, yet they remain capable of aging for 20-25 years. The 1995 will have three decades of longevity, but it will not be approachable before 2006. It exhibits a deep dark ruby/purple color, and a provocative aromatic profile of animal fur, tar, truffles, black cherries, cassis, licorice, and mineral. A medium to full-bodied wine, with a boatload of tannin, considerable grip and structure, and a weighty feel in the mouth, this appears to be a classic vin de garde made in the style of the 1978 Beaucastel (which is still not close to full maturity). Prospective purchasers over the age of forty should be buying this wine for their children.”

Score: 93 (Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (113), October 1997).

"A very ripe, concentrated, and impressively endowed wine. This is another thick, rich, juicy Chateauneuf-du-Pape with that tell-tale black-raspberry, cherry, smoked herbs, roasted coffee and liquorice-scented nose that is profoundly complex. The wine is full bodied and concentrated, as well as slightly riper and more alcoholic than the 1994.”

Score: 93. (Robert Parker, Rhone Book, November 1997).

The bottle on sale is the one in the photographs. It was bought on release from reputable UK wine merchants and stored since purchase as part of a wooden case of 12 in a proper dark underground cellar. It is in good condition with good labels and a good level, as shown.
