Description

'This wine possesses an austerity and aggressiveness to its tannin, but it is a very good to excellent Ducru-Beaucaillou with an earthy, peppery nose of black fruits, earth, and minerals. The wine's attack and mid-palate are ripe, with smoky, black currant fruit. I doubt the 1983 will ever fully shed its tannic astringency, but it is a savory, medium to full-bodied wine that has reached full maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006. Last tasted 3/97 87pts'

Robert Parker

'First tasted in November 2003 when it had an odd nose of "strawberry Tunes" and some volatility. Again in Tokyo in April 2004 at Michael Broadbent's seminar. A pronounced tawny rim. The nose is similar to before, round with a touch of toffee though more austere and leathery this time. The palate is well-knit, quite powerful with good extraction. Fine acidity. More vigour in this bottle than expected and quite impressive for a 1983. 82-84pts'
