Description

1er Cru Supérieur Sauternes from one of the finest vintages of the 20th century.

The bottle belonged to a relative who passed away and was found stored in the cellar during house clearance.

The wine has been stored horizontaly in a cool location since it came in to our possession.

A sensible reserve price has been set on this lot well below the £1100 at which some merchants list this wine.

Of the 1988 vintage, Robert Parker said 'If my instincts are correct, this is the most profound d'Yquem since the legendary 1959.'.

Chateau d'Yquem, Sauternes, 1959: Deep golden towards amber, this fully mature and moderately honeyed full bodied wine is now showing complex flavors and aromas that seem to change on the palate, one moment deeply sweet, the next appealingly spicy, but always with elegant flavors and aromas of dried apricots, caramel, figs. Look as well for orange blossom and nutty aromas and flavors on the long finish. Drining beautifully now, the wine promises to cellar comfortably until 2012 - 2015. Score 97. (Daniel Rogov)
