This cuvee (it receives both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in new oak) is a tribute to the Despagne family, who push all the qualitative buttons in an attempt (successful) to produce something of splendid quality from humble appellations. Along with such Yves Vatelot-fashioned wines as Reignac and Balthus, the luxury garagiste cuvee from the negociant firm of Dourthe, Essence de Dourthe, and several other Despagne cuvees, this is the benchmark for what can be achieved by a generic Bordeaux. It is equal to many classified growths. An amazing 100% Merlot, it possesses great intensity, a huge nose of espresso roast, melted chocolate, black cherries, and berries, a deep, opulent, full-bodied palate, and a stunningly rich, pure, symmetrical, long style. This compelling wine is the result of great ingenuity, creativity, and dedication to one’s craft. It should drink well for at least a decade.
