Description

Chateau Palmer's 1961 is regarded the finest wine ever produced by this Chateau. We were fortunate to taste one of the bottles direct from this cellar and selflessly selected the bottle with poorest levels.

My note for the wine read 'An incredibly rich, figgy and dense nose. Almost some molasses! Very powerful, rich, elegant and long. Still quite tannic. Very fine. Seems almost Rhone-esque from its build and structure. One of those wines which has a huge reputation to contend with but clearly something very special. 6******'.

A copy of Jancis Robinson's note on the same bottle can be seen at
http://bidforwine.wordpress.com/2009/03/11/wiltshire-feature-auction/

For context we also include Robert Parker and Neal Martin's note on the same wine:
'Tasted 9 Times With Consistent Notes. The 1961 Palmer has long been considered to be a legend from this vintage, and its reputation is well-deserved. The wine is at its apogee, with an extraordinary, sweet, complex nose with aromas of flowers, cassis, toast, and minerals. It is intensely concentrated, offering a cascade of lavishly ripe, full-bodied, opulent fruit, soft tannins, and a voluptuous finish. This is a decadent Palmer, unparalleled since in quality with the exception of 1983 and 1989. 99pts'

A slightly deeper hue than the accompanying wine, which turned out to be Palmer 1961. Deep brick rim, but clear. The heavenly bouquet wafts from the glass, to the extent that there is almost no need to bring it close to the nose! A smorgasbord of scents: mulberry, saddle-leather, raspberry and hedgerow, all with unbelievable definition and vigor. The full-bodied palate is perfectly balanced, enhanced by a sense of natural order and exquisite harmony. Mulberry again, tobacco and raspberry; a very supple, plush texture, surprisingly fleshy and almost Merlot, similar to a mature Right Bank wines. Almost an ineffable wine and apart from the Latour the most impressive ’61 I have tasted, but I would opine even more pleasurable than that Pauillac. One of the greatest clarets to have passed my lips. Drink now, but no need to hurry. Tasted October 2006. Drink -2040 100pts
