Description

One bottle of this Sauternes, which if the tasting notes cited below are reliable should prove very decent drinking.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

“The 1988 remains the most classic of the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages. It possesses great richness, sweetness, and unctuous texture, as well as higher acidity, plenty of botrytis, a wonderful, rich, honeyed pineapple, coconut, and orange-scented nose, gobs of rich fruit, and excellent delineation. Approachable now, it promises to age effortlessly for 25-30 years. At one time, Rabaud-Promis was among the most notorious underachievers of Barsac/Sauternes. That all changed in 1986. The 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages offer formidable evidence that Rabaud-Promis is exhibiting more consistency in quality than many of its more renowned neighbors (12/1997)”

93 points Wine Spectator:

“Elegant and full-bodied, exhibiting a burst of botrytis character, impressive structure and spicy, dried apricot, honey, caramel and lemon flavors and a long finish. (4/1995)”

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:

“Fairly pale color. Fresh aromas of fruit salad; some unresolved SO2 gives this a whiff of gunpowder. Very rich, sweet and intensely flavored, given shape and delineation by vibrant acidity. A lovely floral nuance lifts the fruit. Not yet particularly complex, but fat and stuffed with flavor. Enticingly sweet, lingering aftertaste. A classy '88. (8/1998)”

Jancis Robinson

“The first of two wines from this very succulent and successful Sauternes vintage. A relatively light, refreshing mature Sauternes, it tasted just like candied pears. Lovely and juicy. 17.5/20 points. Drink to 2018. (9/2011)”

Some Cellartracker notes:

"12/25/2019 - vagrantone Likes this wine: 93 Points
Another amazing half bottle of this wine. Perfect pairing with Stilton. Exquisite balance, crisp aromatics and impressive texture and length. Will continue to drink very well even in half bottles.

8/19/2019 - Song111 Likes this wine: 93 Points
From a 375 bottle, tasted quite a number of times and always consistent. Cork is fragile, but the wine is absolutely stunning. More developed than a 1990 climens, but still a long way to go. I found that I like it after opening for at least 2 hours and slightly warmer than normal. Where the complexity comes through. It is sweet and well balanced with acidity. Extremely enjoyable wine.

5/18/2019 - vagrantone Likes this wine: 93 Points
Still drinking extremely well and I suspect that it will for another decade or two and that is out of half bottles...Beautiful complexity of aromas with everything you would expect from a Sauternes. Great acidity, which gives this wine balance and liveliness and brings all of the rich aromatics into focus…clearly one of the best vintages for Sauternes over the last half century; these wines are aging extremely well. I have to disagree with those finding this wine simple. Not only are the aromas rich; the only provide a long, clean finish

Still drinking extremely well despite a fairly shaky cork. Excellent fill level, no signs of oxidation. Bright and fresh; great intensity.

In great shape, nice aromatics of apricot and honey, slightly lighter than the '88 Rieussec, and fell a little short of that wine. EWG 10 years on dinner."

I have owned this bottle for many years, and it has been properly cellared during that time. The bottle on sale is the one shown in the photographs and is in the condition shown.
