Description

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, a sleeper of the vintage, is one of the finest traditional cuvees they have made. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine revealing classic Provencal aromas of pepper, garrigue, black cherries, plums, and a hint of earth. Pure, broad, and savory with silky tannins and a lush personality, this fruit-filled Chateauneuf is ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years.

One of the ancient families of Chateauneuf du Pape, the Boirons trace their origins and winemaking back to the mid-1800s. All of the following 2007s performed as well or slightly better than they did prior to bottling, always a good sign.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, which comes from 45- to 50-year-old vines and is a blend of 75% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and the rest Vaccarese, Counoise, and Cinsault, is aged in foudres, tank, and 600-litre demi-muids. This wine displays beautiful black cherry and plum-like fruit, with a gorgeous nose of nori (the seaweed wrappers used in sushi restaurants) intermixed with pepper, lavender, and spice. Very Provencal and full-bodied, with beautiful fruit purity and stunning density and personality, it should drink well for 10-12 years.

This is one of the appellation’s most consistent and brilliant producers of Chateauneuf du Pape, with an impressive record of consistency and high quality dating back well over the thirty years I have been tracking the wines of this appellation.

(assemblage example) purple/mauve colour with a dark red top. Has a cassis, simmered black berries aroma with a little game on the fringe – an animal note – with sizzled pork sausage. There is plenty of good, juicy depth in the bouquet. The palate runs with mulled, ripe berry fruit. There is more on the front than late palate, as per many 2007s, but the length is sound – it is just a matter of time for it to complete itself. There are herbs infused in the taste – this is a handsome picture in the painting. Tayberry, fresh note on the finish. The tannins need a little time. Interesting wine – drink from mid-2010. 2021-22 Nov 2008
