Description

This is wine to stain your teeth. Often considered the "manly" Rhone wine, Noel Verset who is now in his 90's kept about 1.4 hectares of vines after selling some of his best parcels in Reynard to Thierry Allemand. This is traditional Cornas, very old vines, low yields made in his tiny cuverie akin to a garden shed. No new oak here.

The Wine Doctor March 2004
Noel Verset Cornas 1995: This is dense, dark, almost opaque wine, although it pales a little at the rim. The nose here is unusual - it is intensely fruity, full of blackcurrant jam. The palate is full-textured, and has piles and piles of tannic structure. Real power here. This is quite intense. Needs five to seven years at least. 17+/20

Wine Advocate 1997
Verset's excellent, nearly outstanding 1995 Cornas offers a deep purple color, followed by a sweet, fragrant nose of jammy cassis fruit intermixed with minerals, licorice, and spice. Full-bodied, with copious spice, as well as impressive extraction of ripe fruit, this medium to full-bodied, surprisingly accessible Cornas can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15 years.

As a postscript, I just consumed the 1983 and 1985 vintages of Verset's Cornas with great pleasure. The 1983 remains extremely unevolved and young, as does the 1985, but the latter vintage possesses more sweet, up-front fruit, and represents a glorious example of Cornas.
