Domaine Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Les Champauvins 2011

The 2011 is probably the finest CDR Les Champauvins from Alain Jaume to-date and a joy to pleasure with the seasonal foods as autumn approaches.

The Grand Veneur 2011 Cotes du Rhone Les Champauvins is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre from a vineyard just across the border of Chateauneuf du Pape. Its dense ruby hue is followed by aromas of lavender, black cherries, black currants, loamy soil and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, silky textured, elegant effort is hedonistic as well as satisfying. Enjoy it over the next several years. The estate's finest Cotes du Rhone is the 2011 Les Champauvins. It is a more seriously endowed, bigger, richer, more intriguing effort than the other Cotes du Rhones.

(As longtime readers know, Grand Veneur is one of the best-run estates in Chateauneuf du Pape, but their flagship Chateauneuf du Pape offerings are priced too high for this Best Buy report).


JLL 2011 ***(*)
dark red. Oily aroma, game hints in its reduction, animal hide. There are baked airs here, with blackberry fruit present. There is a robust strike of blackberry fruit on the palate, which is mildly textured and pretty thorough. Plenty of drive here, even if it is a bit wild. It gives vigorous drinking, and the tannins need to absorb further. From late 2013. 14.5°. Decant this. 65% G, 30% Syr, 2.5%M, 2.5% Cins this year. 2018-19 Dec 2012.

A quick note for the pedants; I tend to consider the grape varieties in the blend constituents is more likely to be as stated by John Livingstone-Learmonth - as above, rather than the figures quoted by Parker. To my mind, it is more to do with its drinking qualities, but there, as my wife would say "what do I know"?.
