Description

1x bottle from this grower-producer, in excellent condition as seen on the photos. Kept in cool dark cellar since purchase. Specific details of the climat and wine as follows.

Size: 1.48 ha (3.66 ac)
Variety: Pinot Noir
Vine Age: 70% planted in 1980, 30% in 1999
Terroir: 300-meters elevation on a steep, south-facing slope; shallow, poor limestone soils
Viticulture: Lutte raisonnée
Vinification: De-stemmed, 3 days cold (12°C) maceration, 12-15 days alcoholic fermentation. Blending of free run and pressed wine, 12-24 hours decanting. Aged for 12 months in barrel (25% new). Racked and blended in tank, unfined, light filtration.

The verb guetter means to watch over, a reference to this vineyard’s high altitude. The poor soils in this parcel often result in the lowest yields of all the vineyards for the domaine. In the vineyard, grass growth is allowed but limited with regular plowing to maintain a natural soil balance. Moderate use of organic fertilizers and strict pruning to control yields. Green harvest only when necessary.

The annual production is from 625 to 670 cases.

This is a great expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir, retaining its characteristic high acidity, red fruit character, with just a touch of new oak and now a hint of tertiary character. It is drinking beautifully, with fine silky tannins, but should still keep in bottle for many years to come.
