Description

The Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in colour, the 2004 Amon-Ra exudes lovely dark fruit, spice box and anise notes over kirsch, creme de cassis and mincemeat, plus a savory and meaty whiff. Full-bodied, it is generous and rich in the mouth with bright acid and a medium-firm level of fine-grained tannins. It finishes long and fine. Drink it now until 2022+." 99 points

The spectacular Amon Ra 2004 is considered by Australian wine guru, James Halliday (who gives it 96+ points), to be "the best yet, an extraordinary tour de force of winemaking bravado and terroir expression. At one year old, it is still a tenderfoot and yet to communicate its dormant vocabulary, but my goodness what eloquence awaits." Made from 105-115 year-old Shiraz from northern Ebenezer, the wine was hand-plunged 3 times a day before 15 months maturation in 50% fine-grained American oak and 50% new French oak. It sings from deep within of brooding sweet, ripe cassis fruit overscored by notes of violets, vanilla, nutmeg, and molten liquorice poured over glossy black stones. The acidity is fruit-coated and uplifting, the tannins are firm but fruit-soaked and the intensity, balance and length are respectively deep, fine and impressive. It needs another year or two to grow into itself but will evolve into a magnificent signature for what Ben Glaetzer, and Barossa, are all about. Anticipated maturity 2010-2030
