Description

Good reviews for this big Chateauneuf-du-Pape!

The Mayard Estate, says of this wine:

Crau de Ma Mère is created from a selection of very old vines located at Crau, in the north east of the appellation, and is included in the Grenache Conservatory.

One of the parcels planted just after the phylloxera epidemic (1866) belonged to our paternal grandmother, Marie-Louise Mayard. Our father named the parcel “la Crau de ma Mère”, a name that has now passed on to this wine. We never knew our grandmother, so this is our way of paying tribute to her.

The wine is mostly made up of grenache and mourvèdre with barely a hint of syrah. Crau de Ma Mère is an excellent wine, both powerful and elegant and as sun-filled as its terroir. Its bouquet offers a complex palette of very ripe red berries and rounded tannins with a chocolate-flavoured finale.

The Critics say:

The finest, most concentrated, and potentially long-lived of this group is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau de Ma Mere. This beauty exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with ripe black raspberry, blackberry, and kirsch fruit interwoven with notions of camphor, incense, licorice, and graphite. It possesses full-bodied, powerful flavors, high glycerin, silky tannin, and good acids that give the wine a vibrancy as well as laser-like precision. This big Chateauneuf du Pape has the potential to be the finest yet made by the Mayard family. Although drinkable now, it promises to be even better in 2-3 years, and last for 15 or more. R Parker 92 points. (Drink now-2023)

It's big, it's ripe, it's beautiful. The balance between fruit and savoury notes is perfect, like berries that have been macerating in herbs, licorice and freshly roasted coffee. This is a showy Châteauneuf style and ever-so-slightly prune-like from oxidation, but fans of the appellation should love it. Braised meat would be a fine match. Beppi Crosariol 92 points
