Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu 1996 (Domaine des Comtes Lafon)
Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or 1993 (Domaine de la Pousse d'Or)

These are all wines which I bought in whole-case quantities and which I have enjoyed immensely, but I've gathered together here single bottles to help me slim down my cellar.

Set out below are Allen Meadows' Burghound reviews for all the wines except the Bousse d'Or.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes 2000 (Lucien Boillot & Fils) 01/2003
Boillot’s Cherbaudes is consistently the finest around and it too displays an explosive, multidimensional, very fresh nose of earth, leather and a certain animale character followed by intense, powerful flavors that offer plenty of volume and length. Terrific juice. (drink 2007-2012) 91 points

Gevrey-Chambertin 2001 (Drouhin-Laroze) 01/2004
Plenty of Gevrey character is evident on the fresh, high-toned, earthy, dark pinot fruit nose with slightly austere and rustic, medium weight flavors that offer acceptable length and 3 to 4 years of potential. (drink 2005-2009) 86 points

Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 2001 (Domaine Fourrier) 01/2004
Extremely elegant red fruit aromas cut with a touch of earth followed by pretty, pure, light to medium weight flavors that offer excellent precision and good intensity. This is perhaps not a typical villages level wine as there is zero rusticity though there is not much power either. An understated, extremely fresh and pretty wine with vibrant acidity that should improve over the next 4 to perhaps 7 years. (drink 2006-2011) 87 points

Morey St. Denis Clos Solon Vieille Vigne 2001 (Domaine Fourrier) 01/2003
Fourrier consistently excels at producing wines with incredible aromatics and the purity here is nothing short of sensational. While it doesn’t offer the weight, depth of extract and complexity of the Gruenchers, this is still an extremely pretty, essence of pinot wine framed by a touch of crushed herbs and damp earth. (drink 2005-2011) (86-89) points

Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne 2001 (Domaine Fourrier) 01/2003
Picture perfect Chambolle aromas with ultra elegant red fruit and medium weight, sappy, pure and quite fine flavors plus a lovely minerality on the finish. Intense, long and very pretty. (drink 2006-2012) (86-89) points

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 2001 (Jacques Cacheux) 01/2004
The same pattern exists here as well as there is much better oak integration though the oak influence is not exactly shy. The flavors are delicious, velvety and intense with excellent richness, impressive volume and real power. Relatively forward and this finishes with fine persistence. (drink 2005-2011) 89 points

Nuits St. Georges 2001 (Domaine Jean Chauvenet) 01/2004
Pure, earthy and complex dark fruit aromas precede relatively elegant, dense, sappy flavors that offer very good cut and grip. The ripe tannins are dusty with only a hint of finishing rusticity. A lovely, understated and reserved effort that is classic Nuits in character and style. (drink 2006-2011) 86 points

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 2001 (Domaine Pavelot) 04/2004
Gorgeously intense, refined and very fresh elegant red and black fruit trimmed in damp, fresh earth aromas lead to big though not robust flavors that display knock out depth of extract, excellent richness and dazzling length. Quite backward and tight and this will require the better part of a decade to be at its best. Highly recommended and for what the Pavelot wines usually sell for, an indisputable bargain. (drink 2008-2015) 91 points

Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 1991 (Domaine Pavelot) 10/2001
A subtle and reserved nose of beguiling complexity combines with exquisitely detailed flavors that are precise, rich and ripe. As with many Côte de Beaune 91s, there is a slightly drying quality to the finish but otherwise, this is an outstanding effort and one that is still on the ascendancy. (drink 2005-2009) 89 points

Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 2000 (Jean-Marc Bouley) 04/2002
Easily the best of these 2000s with much bigger and richer fruit, medium weight flavors that offer very good volume, solid density and excellent length. Although this is very supple for young Rugiens, there is very good intensity and flavor authority with a firm, moderately structured finish. (drink 2006-2010) 89 points

Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu 1996 (Domaine des Comtes Lafon)02/2008
Though this has always had a wonderfully sweet red and black fruit and still does, the aromas are beginning to take on subtle secondary notes. The middle weight flavors are delicious, pure, edgy and possess evident breed though the finish is a bit short as the acidity has begun to become much more evident. While this should be capable of living for years, I would be inclined to be drinking it over the next 5 years or so as the finish risks drying out as the acidity is no longer subtle if not actually intrusive or harsh. Consistent notes. (drink by 2012) 87 points

Other reviews of the 1996 Lafon Santenots:

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, March/April 1999, Issue #83
Deep red-ruby. Complex, captivating aromas of bitter cherry, black raspberry and smoky, spicy oak. Expansive but graceful, with lovely chocolatey richness and a fleshy mouth feel. Really quite seamless. Finishes very long and ripe, with thoroughly suave tannins. Showing remarkably well already. 92 points

John Gilman, 01/2003
In notable contrast to the very primary ’96 Clos des Ducs and Lafarge Clos des Chênes paired up with the Lafon Santenots, this wine is quite open for inspection today and is surprisingly giving and charming. The nose is complex and very intriguing, offering up notes of sarsaparilla, cassis, woodsmoke, dark chocolate, some blossoming game tones, and a very restrained framing of toasty oak. On the palate the wine is broad, full-bodied and chocolatey, with fine depth at the core, round tannins, and fine length on the soft and accessible finish. This does not posses the detail and focus of the two wines paired up with it, and without the same spines of acidity, it will not age anywhere near as long. But, it is nonetheless an extremely well-made and tasty bottle of Volnay that will drink well with a couple of years cellaring to fully round off. 2005-2020+? 91. (drink 2005-2020) 91 points

Pierrre-Antoine Rovani, Wine Advocate 10/1998
Consistently Lafon's finest red wine, the dark ruby-colored Volnay Santenots du Milieu is magnificent. Intense and profound blackberry aromas are followed by a massive explosion of red and black cherries. It possesses amazing richness, freshness, juiciness, and depth, as well as admirable concentration, complexity, harmony, and balance. Its persistent finish reveals fresh herbs, candied raspberries, cherries, and supple tannins. Drink this gem between 2002 and 2007. Bravo! (drink 2002-2007) (92-94) points
