Description

An excellent year for cabernet sauvignon, ***** , good deep impressive appearance, Bordeaux like cedar nose, sweet, very scented, a powerhouse, dry, crisp, fruit dominant, long trajectory, **** I presume a long life, Michael Broadbent.

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson

American Belle 2nd Edition (Switzerland): Tasted blind: Clear garnet in colour. Nose of leather and tobacco. Tannins are still present but there is enough power and fruit left to give this Opus One a good life. Coffee and berry notes are present. Drink with no hurry.

1994 Opus One
Opened and drank slightly chilled. Drinking great! Nose of a Bordeaux, lightness of Burgundy and fruit of California all in one – very much a world wine. Beautiful subtle fruit nose with leather, saddle wood and a sweet red currant. Flavours of smoked blood sausage, eucalyptus, red licorice and spice. Nice rounded texture, but not heavy. Definitely in its prime. Rated 95+

Tasted in a flight of this 1994 Opus One and a 1995 Opus One with a 1994 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet all from excellent storage. Big wine that has plenty of life left, complex tobacco and fruit, not overripe or jammy. Tons of tannin. Excellent

8/24/2012 - GUNTASMITTEL WROTE:97 Points
We have been polishing off our collection of these because they are at their sublime prime as far as we are concerned. The bouquet at the opening is a rich fruit of the forest, sweet spice, clove and leather. The tannins are integrated and soft with a medium to long finish. The wines structure and balance is unbelievable. The taste is a currant graphite, cedar and spice that is very aged Boudreaux in style. Drank this with a slow cooked shinbone of wagu beef. One my favourite wines of the last 5 years.
