For auction is an extremely limited bottle of the Penfolds flagship white wine "Yattarna" Chardonnay from the 2007 vintage. This is the Penfolds white wine equivalent of Grange.

Comment as follows:

Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focussed and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia.
Selectively sourcing only the very best Chardonnay fruit from coolclimate regions, coupled with sensitive and enlightened winemaking, the style continues to evolve.

Yattarna Penfolds Chardonnay 2007

Region: Tasmania, Adelaide Hills, Henty

COLOUR Pale straw with a light green hue.

NOSE At once, noticeably different to the Bin A Chardonnay. This Chardonnay expression exudes a limey citrus restraint that has stylistically evolved across many years of fine-tuning of sourcing & winemaking technique. Cantaloupe, cured bacon rind and subtle, spicy oak give way to complex nut kernel and pecan pie complexities- no doubt arising from yeast lees battonage in barrique.

PALATE An explosion of citrus and white stone fruits prelude a layered and creamy custard apple-like mid palate. A core of fine, mineral, lemony acid skates across the entire palate, projecting great length of flavour and linearity.

The aspiration and independence of mind across generations of Penfolds winemaking inspired the winery to embark on a program to create a white wine that could one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange. Selectively sourcing only the very best Chardonnay fruit from cool-climate regions, coupled with sensitive and enlightened winemaking, the style continues to evolve.

Yattarna reflects Penfolds' patience and continued commitment to its original goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal language, meaning 'little by little, gradually'. Each vintage provides the opportunity to further raise the quality bar.

When Penfolds embarked on its project to create a white wine to stand alongside Grange, the recipe was completely wrong. While “powerful’ and “oaky” might be themes that command respect in the world of big reds they most definitively do not in the white wine world. This acknowledged, the move away from both of these traits has been dramatic in recent years, expressed most emphatically in the 2007 vintage. Delving ever further into the cool south, this wine includes a record level of Tasmanian fruit (edging close to fifty percent), as well as a lower dose of new oak (a touch over one-third). This produces a wine of greater definition than this label has exhibited to date. Cool, zesty, Tasmanian acidity infuses the wine with a lingering minerality and a backbone which carries it long into the finish. It ricochets with all manner of fruits – figs, peaches, citrus zest and the complexity of lemon curd. The recipe, at long last, is spot on.

This wine was bought by me upon release and has been correctly stored in a wine cooler ever since. The bottle is in perfect condition.
