Description

May 2021, with an average price of £71

1989 (majestic) VERY GOOD VINTAGE. Fairly structured and balanced wine; with a wide, intense, and complex scent; generous and complete taste with an elegant tannin level, very good stuff, and persistence; long-lived.

The 1989 vintage for Piedmont was truly excellent, one of the all-time greats.

The winter was very cold but unusually snow-free with instances of heavy fog instead. The spring was dry and towards March temperatures started to heat up, although April saw both rain and fog. Despite the rising temperatures, hailstorms struck in May and early June with the regions of Barolo and Serralunga hit the hardest. From mid-June onwards, the weather was hot and dry although hail did strike again in Roero. August was, for the most part, warm and dry but the weather turned at the start of September. The bad weather momentarily disrupted the vines but then perked up in time for the rest of the harvest. The hot days and cool nights during the ripening period proved particularly perfect for Nebbiolo, one of the region’s most important grapes.

Overall, all the grape varieties crucial to Barolo and Barbaresco – Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo –were in great condition. Many of the resulting reds were considered exceptional; big, alcoholic, and structured with rich, concentrated fruit. Many had the capacity to age for a very long time
