Description

Chateau Pichon Lalande is a 2nd growth property situated in the Bordeaux commune of Pauillac. Alongside Pichon’s land in this commune, the Chateau also owns a tiny parcel of land just over the border from Pauillac in Saint Julien. Now, purely on the technicality that this piece of land lays just over the border from Pauillac (Where the Classed Growth Appellation is granted to them), the wine that is produced here is strictly forbidden from being blended into their Grand Vin. Instead it has to be bottled separately under its own label. Only 400 cases of this wine were produced in 2006.

Deep ruby hue with just a hint of mahogany at the edge of the glass. Savoury aromas are just starting to emerge – notes of smoked meats and roasted chestnuts mingle with blackcurrants, plums, liquorice and Asian spices. Velvety-textured with loads of fruit and a plump, expansive, mouthfeel, the hints of ripe blackcurrant and notes of coffee and vanilla frame a delicious palate. This is rich and silky with lots of extract and ripe fruit character. Lovely, fragrant finish with ripe, nicely integrated tannins. Excellent quality. A superb wine that will cellar effortlessly for well over a decade.

This is NOT the second or third wine of Pichon Lalande, this is the real top drawer stuff, made from an excellent vintage and made with EXACTLY the same care and attention as the 1st wine just over the border. The grapes are hand-picked, and then pressed painstakingly in small basket presses, tiny parcel after tiny parcel. Then the wine is moved to new and one year old oak Barriques for 18 months before being fined with egg white and left to mature in the cellars of Pichon. It is treated in the very same way that all the great classed growths are.

The 2006 Pichon Lalande, which blows away the 2005, represents a return to the velvety-textured, rich, sexy style most readers would associate with Pichon Lalande. This blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot no Petit Verdot was included in the final blend exhibits a dense purple color as well as abundant aromas of chocolate, coffee, cedar, black currants, and a subtle touch of smoke, a rich, savory, full-bodied mouthfeel, plump, fleshy fruit, and a superb finish. This is a 21st century version of the brilliant 1996 - Robert Parker

Quite frankly this is amazing Claret from one of the very best Chateau. The skill and care is completely evident and when you consider that currently the 2006 main wine from Pichon is selling for around close to £100 per bottle.
