Description

An excellent bottle in every respect. Good high level, well into the neck, a crisp label and a pristine capsule.

The 42 acre Bordeaux vineyard of Chateau Saint Pierre located in the Beychvelle sector of St. Julien is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The vine density is 10,000 vines per hectare. The property has old vines. On average, many of their vines are close to 50 years of age. The terroir of Chateau Saint Pierre is gravel, sand and clay.
Interestingly, the wine is not made at Chateau Saint Pierre. Due to a long standing arrangement in the appellation, after harvesting, the grapes are transported to the chai of their other estate, Chateau Gloria for vinification. To produce the wine of Chateau St. Pierre , the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks of various sizes. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. The wine is aged in an average of 60% new, French oak barrels for between of 14 to 16 months, depending on the style and character of the vintage.

Very well aged. Pencil lead, cigar box, and lots of dark fruits still evident.

11/1/2018 - O'MEARA LIKES THIS WINE:
A beautiful and savoury textbook St Julien. There colour is ruby red with some orange hues on the rim. The nose is fully mature and tertiary but still vibrant. The palate is smooth and resolved. Drink up.

10/30/2017 - GCARL WROTE:92 Points
P&P at party. Still surprisingly bright fruit, cedar, leather on the nose with nice fruit, velvet mouth feel. Decanting not necessary.

11/10/2015 - MIKE410 LIKES THIS WINE:95 Points
Outstanding! Garnet colour, medium to full body, medium finish. Still lots of tannins in this wine. Has many more years. Smooth, silk like. Red and blackberries with slight oak finish.
