TWO LOTS OF TWO HALF-BOTTLES of this Sauternes 1st Growth.

In fully original condition, half bottles from the excellent dessert wine vintage of 1997.

Very warm spring, but some frost in October reduced the crop. Hot humid August, but September was dry, and picking began around 11 September. The first pickings were of concentrated but not botrytised fruit, and botrytis only set in during October. Some estates continued picking well into November, and those who picked late had wines in rich botrytis character. Quality slightly higher in Sauternes than Barsac, but excellent throughout the region. Probably the best vintage since 1990.

Some Cellartracker comments:
Good fill, cork sound and difficult to get out. Sweet caramel apricot nose that entices. Strong caramel/burnt demerara sugar notes with hint of apricot essence. Soft acidity. Moderate finish. A caramel Sauterne first and foremost. didn't change in the glass. Perhaps better in it's youth but has certainly held up well over 21 years. The heat of the alcohol showed slightly

Full, delicate, rather intense nose. Citrus, apricots, pine-apple candy balanced by elegant botrytis and just hints of rubber suit.
Medium body, intense and elegant palate. Beautiful, pure and long. Apricots, botrytis and some coconut in utter balance. No disturbing un-clean notes.
Sauternes in the elegant camp. In perfect drinking window.
13.5% alcohol, and a deep golden brown in colour. T showed concentrated dried apricot, with vanilla bean, crème brulée, marmalade / candied citrus peel, cumquat, and ginger. The alcohol was also noticeable. There was also an interesting discussion about the acid level – it appeared different depending on whether you were eating a sweet-ish dessert (therefore moderate appearing acid), or the blue cheese (higher acid). I suppose we just had to try both.
6/3/2013 - CHBEAUMONT WROTE:92 Points
Old gold; barley sugar, crème brûlée; very sweet, buxom, bold, flavoursome; wears its heart on its sleeve. Drink & next 10 years. Terrific.
