"Black licorice and currants on the nose.Very fragrant.Full-bodied,with chewy tannins and a long finish.Still needs time to come together.Best after 2008".
(92 Points).

James Suckling. (The Wine Spectator. '95/'96 Retrospective. 2007).

"While not as backward as the 1996,the opaque,purple-colored 1995 Leoville Poyferre is a tannic, unevolved, dense, concentrated wine that will require another two or three more years cellaring. The 1995 exhibits toast, black currant, mineral, and subtle tobacco,in its complex, yet youthful aromatics.Powerful, dense, concentrated cassis and blueberry flavors might be marginally softer than in the 1996,but there is plenty of grip and structure to this big wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2030".
(90+ Points).

A more recent tasting note on Cellartracker:-

"Paternity Leave (including Thanksgiving); 11/5/2018-12/8/2018: Immediately on decanting, wafting of blackberry aromas from the decanter. Deep ruby with moderate age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, some black fruits but also red cherry, minerality throughout the nose; medium-full bodied, integrated fine-grained tannins, balanced medium alcohol (13% labeled), fresh medium acidity throughout, deep red and black fruits through the midpalate; clean persistent medium-plus finish. Similar to my last taste in 2013, this wine showcases superb balance, elegance, and stellar blend of aromatics, early/mid/late palate, and finish. Not the most complex with any of them (though not a simple wine either...), but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Just delicious, and still at early maturity with very little change in the last 5 years.
1 hour air: A bit more complexity and subtlety on the nose. Exquisitely enjoyable".
(95 Points).
