I am pleased to be listing one bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1903.

(No this is not a typing error, this a genuine 1903 bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild!)

Acquired recently, this bottle was found (yes, that does still happen) on the clearance of a property in Scotland, where it had lain undisturbed for what must have been decades!

As you will see from the pictures above, the bottle is missing its label, (I imagine this disappeared many, many years ago), however the hand blown bottles of this era were finished with a glass "seal" which bears the name of the chateau and the vintage. To my mind, having the vintage embossed into the bottle is more reliable than any paper label.

The level is remarkably still into the neck, which is amazing for a vintage of this age, and as the 4th picture clearly shows, the cork is wonderfully tight.

The cork also bears what I believe to be "Chateau Lafite" - certainly the "EAU and LAF" are clearly visible below the capsule - and also the vintage - 1903.

The capsule itself is in remarkable condition, again testament to the fact that this bottle has lain undisturbed for many years.

The 1903 vintage of Lafite was one of the lowest outputs ever, with only 229 hogsheads (hogshead - 46 gallons) being produced, leading to the 1903 being one of the rarest of the 20th century.

I have spent the last few days searching for a similar bottle and did find one advertised via a french wine merchant at 4000 euros plus taxes and the indicative price on 90pluswines.com is £3941 + VAT. I would assume that these are therefore from one and the same retailer.

Please do your own reserach though!

I appreciate the photographs on BfW are limited in size, so if you would like to receive the full size photographs, please send me a message.

CORRECTION:

Please note, the "level" on this bottle should read BASE OF NECK / VERY TOP OF SHOULDER...

Other details

Condition report:

Label: Missing - although bottle confirms vintage
Capsule: Excellent for year (grubby but virtually intact)
Level: Into Neck - this is in itself remarkable!

Clarity: I am still waiting for the bottle to "settle" following its recent journey and will update this in due course.

Colour: Again, I would prefer to give the bottle a further few days to settle and will update accordingly.
