Description

Before the 1970s,Chateau Meyney was known as 'Chateau Meyney Prieure des Couleys' Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.Château Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. In 1662, it was a Convent mentioned in records under the name Prieuré des Couleys. The estate belonged to the Luetkens family for several generations, and was then acquired by Mr Désiré Cordier in 1919.
Today, the estate stretches over some of the best hilltops above the Gironde Estuary. The vineyard of 51 hectares is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 30% et Petit Verdot 10%.
The Cru Bourgeois classification lists some of the châteaux from the Médoc that were not included in the 1855 Classification of Crus Classés, or Classed Growths. Notionally, Cru Bourgeois is a level below Cru Classé, but still of high quality. However, only nine Cru Bourgeois Chateaux have this higher status level of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.

1966 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux and in his "Vintage Wine" book,Michael Broadbent describes the 1966 vintage as follows:-

"One of my favourite vintages, which I have always described as a lean,long-distance runner.

"A fine bottle in very good condition. With its very classic nose of spices and musk, this has class, elegance and fine tannins.A civilised and spiritual wine, rather than a voluptuous and sensual one".
(17/20 Points).

Michel Bettane. (A Prestigious Tasting. Chateau Meyney over 50 years of its history.Tasting notes on the 1966 vintage. December 2008).

I cannot find a Cellartracker tasting note on this wine. However tasting notes from a previous sale on Bid for Wine for 1966 Chateau Meyney Prieure des Couleys are:-

"Classic nose, sweet, perfumed ripe fruit and earth – good balance, rich and quite deep. Wonderful soft, light mouth feel with scented fruit flavours, black cherries and plums. Dropped out tannins".
