Description

Apart from what appears to be one of the best clarets from the 1987 vintage, the Hans Erni design label,(with a tribute from Philippine de Rothschild to her late father) makes this bottle unique, with one of the most collectible Mouton Rothschild labels, and going forward a potentially great investment (see Robert Parker's notes below):-

"This would appear to be a sure bet for the wine of the vintage. Certainly, it is the most complete and backward 1987, with at least 10-15 years of aging potential. The touching dedication from the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild's daughter on the label is almost worth the price of one bottle. Additionally, 1987 was the last vintage of the Baron, and thus will probably fetch a fortune in 40 or 50 years. This is one of the deepest and most opaque wines of the vintage, with a tight, yet promising bouquet of cedar and black currants. This wine exhibits surprising depth, medium to full body, and plenty of tannin in the finish. An amazingly powerful wine for the vintage,it is richer than the 1989 and 1990!".

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. January 1998).

"One of the top 1987s we've tasted. This is a rich, thick, concentrated wine with layers of plum, currant, nutmeg and vanilla flavors and full tannins on the finish. A trace of mineral comes through".

The Wine Spectator. (May 1990).

"Another highly sought-after Mouton label, this Hans Erni memorial of the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild was snapped up by the Swiss market and seen in the U.S. for only a short period of time. Aside from being highly collectible, this is a great 1987. Fullish and concentrated for the vintage. I see a future for this wine, which is amazing given the lightness of the vintage".

Clyde Beffa Jr (K&L Wines).
