Description

This unique bottle of 1996 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux has become an expensive sought-after rarity in the world of fine wine.
In 2017, it was confirmed that Martin and Olivier Bouygues of Chateau Montrose had bought this mythical 11 hectaire domaine,Clos Rougeard from the Foucaults. It had been run by eight generations of the Foucault family.
The Foucault brothers had a long, yet quiet history producing their Clos Rougeard red wine (100% Cabernet Franc) under the Saumur-Champigny appellation.Wine aficionados rank the domaine among the top vineyards of the Loire, and while Clos Rougeard seems for many years to have had a very low profile, since Charles Foucault died in 2015,the cult status of the vineyard has shot into the stratosphere and similar to the small production wines of Noel Verset Cornas (Noel Verset also died in 2015) and Auguste Clape Cornas (He died in 2018) the rare older vintages available, such as this bottle of 1996 Les Poyeux are retailing for huge prices (at least £450 per bottle). The Clos Rougeard wines are unique within the appellation, and without doubt the Foucault brothers deserve to have been ranked among France's finest wine producers.
The vineyards are tended without herbicides or fertilisers, with the plough being an important method of weed control. After harvest by hand, the fruit is destemmed and fermented in barrel with the chapeau submerged by foot or by pumping over. The reds undergo malolactic fermentation in barrel, the Les Poyeux in used one-year-old barrels, often acquired from notable Bordeaux estates. There is no fining and no filtration, minimal use of sulphur, and the wine is bottled after 18-24 months in oak.

“A seriously great producer of seriously great wine".
