Description

1998 was a superb vintage in St.Emilion and Jean-Antoine Nony believes that his 1998 wine (90% Merlot,10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Malolactic fermentation in 100% new French oak) is even superior to his 1989 and 1990 vintages:-

"The 1998 Grand Mayne, which has continued to gain weight, richness and volume after bottling may be,along with the 2000 the most concentrated and powerful Grand Mayne yet produced.A saturated purple color is accompanied by a phenomenal of licorice, smoke, graphite and cassis aromas (reminiscent of dry vintage port). This huge, massive effort is low in acidity, highly extracted, with an unctuous texture, gobs of glycerin, and a multidimensional, chewy, long finish.A dazzling wine and undoubtedly a sleeper of the vintage.Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020".
(94 Points).

Robert Parker. (Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide. Sixth Edition).

"The finest Grand Mayne to date, this is a wine of majestic weight, richness, and volume. The most concentrated and powerful Grand Mayne yet produced".
(93 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. January 2003).

"California in St.-Emilion. Black color, with spice, coffee and tobacco aromas. Full-bodied and thick, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins. A blockbuster. *Top 100 Wines of 2001 #36*".
(93 Points).

James Suckling. (The Wine Spectator. January 2001).
