Description

I tasted this wine out of barrel with Marc Sorrel and awarded it 98 Points at the time.RP published his tasting notes (see below) a few months later and was in complete accord with my views. It is a magnificent wine and having been drinking the wine regularly since buying some cases myself, although some 20+ years later,it continues to retain the pure and concentrated style that it was showing in its youth and I would suggest decanting this bottle 2-3 hours in advance.

Topterroir.

"There are twelve barrels of this spectacularly concentrated 1998 Hermitage Le Greal. The only time a Sorrel Hermitage did the same thing to me was when I tasted the prodigeous 1978 and 1979.The opaque black/purple-colored 1998 achieved 13.7% alcohol. If it evolves in barrel the way it should,it will be a candidate for a near perfect score.Sensationally extracted and seamless in the mouth, this wine possesses fabulous concentration,a multidimensional, layered personality, phenomenal purity, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. The tannin is sweet, and the wine flamboyant, exotic, yet neither heavy nor out of balance. There are copious quantities of blackberry jam, licorice, smoke, prunes, and truffles in this staggeringly great young Hermitage. It must be tasted to be believed.Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030".
(96-99 Points).

A recent tasting note on this wine on Cellartracker:-

"Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): Stunning Hermitage. This is everything a non-Chave Hermitage should be. A touch of olive and spice, but silky fruit and potent earth tones as well. Very thickly textured on the palate, with a saline/savory element that is incredibly powerful".
(95 Points).

ACYSO. (Cellartracker. 8/3/2018).
