Description

TWO bottles.

Owned by the Sabon family since 1932 and now run by the three grandsons of the original Joseph Sabon.

Clos du Mont Olivet owns 27 hectares of Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards that are well placed, in the northeast portion of the appellation. The majority of their vines are planted mostly to red wine varietals. 2 hectares are reserved for the production of white Chateauneuf du Pape wine.

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Vibrant red color. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, candied cherry, allspice and clove, with an intense floral quality that gaining strength with air. Showing more energy and delicacy from bottle than it did from barrel last year; in fact, there's something Burgundian going on here. Silky and seamless on the palate, with a bracing minerality adding punch to its sweet red fruit and floral pastille qualities. Finishes spicy and very long, with lingering red fruit and floral notes. This wine virtually always delivers the most bang for the buck of any Chateauneuf tete de cuvee and this vintage continues that streak. (JR) (1/2012)

94 points Wine Spectator
Tight and rather backward for the vintage, with a strong chalk and iron profile up front that holds the core of dark fig, macerated black currant and roasted woodspice at bay for now. Extra bay, black tea and tobacco notes run through the finish. A gorgeous throwback style that needs time to round into form. Best from 2015 through 2030. (JM) (6/2012)

Much of their Grenache plantings are from vines that are close to 90 years old. Their oldest vines are located on the stony terroir of La Crau. Those Grenache vines are over 100 years old. They also own vines on clay soils and terroir with numerous small rocks and stones.

Clos du Mont Olivet is a traditionally managed Southern Rhone Valley estate. Until the early 1970’s, they were still farming using only horses. They bought their first tractor in 1972. Starting in 1997, they began experimenting with destemming.

They liked the results and today, more than 60% of their fruit is destemmed. Fermentation takes place in cement vats and the wines are raised in large foudres or old barrels
